NEW YORK, May 4. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump has not ruled out that Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whom the American leader appointed as his interim national security advisor, will hold the two jobs indefinitely.
"He could, yeah. He could," Trump told NBC News in an interview.
Henry Kissinger held the posts of secretary of state and national security advisor from 1973 to 1975.
"There’s a theory that you don’t need two people, but I think I have some really great people that could do a good job," Trump said.
Trump also said that the transfer of Mike Waltz from the post of national security advisor to U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations is not a punishment. "I just think he’ll do a nice job in the new position," he said.
Politico reported that the White House plans that Rubio will combine the positions of secretary of state and national security advisor for at least six months. As one of the sources noted, Rubio did not plan to take up the position of national security advisor - he was asked to do so personally by Trump and his chief of staff.
