CAIRO, November 19. /TASS/. At least 17,492 children have died in the Gaza Strip because of Israel’s continuing military activities since the beginning of the current escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in early October 2023, the enclave’s authorities said.

This number includes 211 newborns and 825 children under 1. At least 35,060 minors have lost one or both parents and around 3,500 are suffering from undernutrition.

According to Gaza’s authorities, 204 shelters for displaced persons have been attacked in the Gaza Strip. Nearly 130 educational establishments have been ruined and more than 340 sustained serious damage after Israeli bombardments. Some 750,000 schoolchildren are deprived of the possibility to attend classes.

In all, according to Gaza’s health ministry, the death toll from the escalation in the enclave nears 44,000, with more than 104,000 people being wounded.

Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7 after militants from the Gaza Strip-based radical Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise incursion on Israeli territory, killing many Israeli kibbutz residents living near the Gaza border and abducting more than 240 Israelis, including women, children and the elderly. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched bombardments of the enclave and some areas in Lebanon and Syria, as well as a ground operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Clashes are also reported in the West Bank.
