Syria, Lebanon oppose attempts to forcibly displace Gazans, their foreign ministers say

The ministers accused the Israeli military of committing war crimes against the Palestinians, calling for an end to hostilities, "an end to Israel's occupation of the territories of Palestine, Lebanon and the Golan Heights"

BEIRUT, October 23. /TASS/. The foreign ministers of Syria and Lebanon have decried the attempts to forcibly displace Gaza Strip residents and demanded immediate efforts to provide humanitarian aid to the area, according to their joint statement, reported by the Syrian news agency SANA.

"The sides call for measures [to ensure] the immediate and unconditional provision of humanitarian assistance to Gaza, and underscore their categorical rejection of any attempt to forcibly displace the Palestinian people," Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad and Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib stated following their meeting in Damascus.

The ministers accused the Israeli military of committing war crimes against the Palestinians, calling for an end to hostilities, "an end to Israel's occupation of the territories of Palestine, Lebanon and the Golan Heights" and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

The situation in the Middle East sharply escalated following an incursion of Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip into Israel on October 7. Hamas regards the attack as a response to Israeli actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Jerusalem's Temple Mount. Israel has declared a complete siege of the Gaza Strip and has started delivering strikes on that area and parts of Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank.

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for the UN secretary general, earlier said Israel had informed the UN that 1.1 million Palestinians should evacuate to the south of the Gaza Strip. Dujarric said this requirement also applies to all UN staff, along with those who have taken refuge in UN facilities, including schools, medical centers and clinics. The Israel Defense Forces later published the call for Gaza Strip residents to evacuate to the south on Telegram. The Palestinian organization Hamas urged residents to ignore Israel's recommendation. The group also asked the UN to take action against the forced displacement of Palestinians.
