Danish Prime Minister supports Finland's early accession to NATO

Mette Frederiksen also added that Denmark "will do everything possible to support a swift application process after the formal application"

STOCKHOLM, May 12. /TASS/. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Thursday welcomed the statement of Finland's leaders that they support the country’s membership in NATO.

"Strong statements from the Finnish President and the Prime Minister. Denmark will of course welcome Finland wholeheartedly in NATO. [It] will strengthen the Alliance and our common security," Frederiksen wrote on Twitter.

The prime minister also added that Denmark "will do everything possible to support a swift application process after the formal application."

According to a joint statement released on Thursday by President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin, Finland is to apply for NATO membership without delay. A formal decision is expected to be made on Sunday, May 15.

Sweden's parliament will vote on Monday, May 16. According to the Expressen newspaper, the government will hold an additional meeting on the same day to make a formal decision on Sweden's NATO application. According to polls, a majority of the kingdom's population would like to become a member of the alliance if Finland does as well. Many Finnish and Swedish experts argue that the two countries should join NATO at the same time.
