Putin congratulates Coventry on her election as IOC president — Kremlin

The Russian leader is confident that Kirsty Coventry's personal athletic experience and interest in the real promotion of noble Olympic ideals will contribute to the success in such a responsible job

MOSCOW, March 20. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent his congratulations to Kirsty Coventry on her election as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

"The results of the voting that took place convincingly testify to your high authority in the sports world and to the recognition of your outstanding personal achievements. I am confident that your unique experience and interest in the real promotion of noble Olympic ideals will contribute to your success in such a responsible job," the telegram published on the Kremlin's website said.

Putin added that he wished Coventry "prosperity and strong - truly sporting - health."

Coventry will become the first female IOC president. She will take office on June 24.

The future IOC president is 41 years old. She is a two-time Olympic champion (2004, 2008) in the 200-meter backstroke. She also has three Olympic silver medals, one bronze medal and is a three-time world champion. She has been Zimbabwe's Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture since 2018. Coventry has been a member of the IOC Executive Board since 2023, having served as a member from 2018-2021.
