FIFA extends rules allowing foreigners to suspend employment contracts with Russian clubs

On March 7, FIFA allowed foreign players and coaches of Russian clubs to suspend their employment contracts until June 30, 2022

TASS, June 21. Foreign players and coaches will be allowed to suspend employment contracts with Russian clubs until June 30, 2023, the FIFA press service said on Tuesday.

"Should clubs affiliated to the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) or the Football Union of Russia (FUR) not reach a mutual agreement with their respective foreign players and coaches before or on 30 June 2022, and unless otherwise agreed in writing, these players and coaches will have the right to suspend their employment contracts with their clubs until 30 June 2023," the statement said.

On March 7, FIFA allowed foreign players and coaches of Russian clubs to suspend their employment contracts until June 30, 2022. Krasnodar, Rostov and Kazan’s Rubin ended up being the hardest hit clubs. Twenty-one foreign players have either terminated or put their contracts on hold. Krasnodar and Moscow’s Lokomotiv head coaches German Daniel Farke and Markus Gisdol have left their respective clubs.

On February 28, UEFA and FIFA suspended Russian teams and clubs from participatng in competitions due to the situation in Ukraine. On May 3, the UEFA Executive Committee decided to suspend Russian clubs from participating in the UEFA EURO in 2022-2023 season, and the men’s team was suspended from the UEFA Nations League.

Ukraine’s Football Championship was terminated in February, Shakhtar was declared the champion.
