Russian crew on ISS carries out manual re-entry training

It is reported that after a thorough analysis of the situation, it was decided that the damaged ship would return in crewless mode

ISS, January 17. /TASS/. Russian members of the International Space Station’s crew have conducted a scheduled training session to practice manually controlling the descent of their spacecraft, TASS special correspondent, Roscosmos cosmonaut Dmitry Petelin reports.

It was routine training, usually carried out in the middle of a space mission. For this the cosmonauts use an on-board simulator (a simulator program on a laptop) for maintaining the skill. The leading specialist of the Yu. A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center Ignat Ignatov conducted the briefing from Mission Control.

"First, there were theoretical instructions on how to perform the task, taking into account the characteristics of the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft. After the arrival of the Soyuz MS-23, another training session will follow," Petelin added.

On January 11, the government commission decided to extend the mission of Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev, Dmitry Petelin and NASA astronaut Frank Rubio due to damage to the radiator of the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft.

After a thorough analysis of the situation, it was decided that the damaged ship would return in crewless mode. The crew will travel back to Earth on the Soyuz MS-23, which is scheduled to blast off on February 20.

On November 17, 2021, TASS and Roscosmos signed a memorandum of cooperation, according to which the agency's office was opened on the ISS. Cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin became the first special correspondent for TASS. His flight lasted 12 days. Oleg Artemyev took over as the agency’s second special correspondent. The current contributor to the TASS news feed from the orbital outpost is Dmitry Petelin.
