Washington stacks its Summit for Democracy with US Democratic Party loyalists — Lavrov

The second Summit for Democracy is being held in a virtual format on March 29-30

MOSCOW, March 30. /TASS/. The United States has invited primarily those who are loyal to today’s US Democratic Party to its Summit for Democracy, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday in an interview to Cuba’s Prensa Latina news agency.

"The second Summit for Democracy, hosted by US President Joe Biden, is now taking place. The list of invitees is symptomatic. No comprehensible criteria were applied. The only requirement for participants was to be loyal, not so much to [the institutions of] American democracy, but rather to the current iteration of the US Democratic Party," the top Russian diplomat said.

The second Summit for Democracy is being held in a virtual format on March 29-30, with Zambia, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, the United States and South Korea acting as co-chairs of the event.

The first such event was organized by Washington last December, with delegations from 110 countries and territories attending it via a video linkup. Egypt, China, Russia, Turkey and a number of other countries were not invited. Lavrov said at that time that the attendees were first and foremost those countries that march in lockstep with Washington.
