MOSCOW, May 13. /TASS/. Presidents of Russia and Tajikistan Vladimir Putin and Emomali Rakhmon discussed the situation around Afghanistan during a phone call and agreed that both countries’ agencies will continue to cooperate to ensure security on the Tajik-Afghan border, Kremlin press office announced Friday.
"The sides had an exchange of opinions on the situation around Afghanistan, first and foremost in the light of the recently escalated activity of terror groups in Afghanistan. It was reaffirmed that relevant agencies of Russia and Tajikistan will continue to cooperate in order to ensure security on the Tajik-Afghan border," Kremlin said, adding that the phone call took place on Tajikistan’s initiative.
After Washington announced a withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan in spring 2021, the Taliban movement (outlawed in Russia) embarked on a large-scale operation on gaining control over the country. On August 15 that year, Taliban militants entered Kabul without fighting, and President Ashraf Ghani left the republic. On September 6 last year, the movement claimed control over the entire territory of Afghanistan and announced an interim government, which has not yet been recognized by any country.
