Russia continues building nuclear icebreakers fleet to develop Arctic — prime minister

Mikhail Mishustin also noted the progress of the machine tool industry, which is the core for the entire shipbuilding industry

MOSCOW, March 26. /TASS/. Russia continues building its fleet of nuclear icebreakers for further development of the Arctic, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said when presenting the Cabinet's report in the State Duma, the lower house of parliament.

"For further development of the Arctic, we continue to form our fleet of the largest and most powerful nuclear icebreakers in the world. We have already completed the construction of the fourth vessel, named Yakutia. The fifth one - Chukotka - has been launched. The sixth nuclearpowered icebreaker of this class, Leningrad, was laid down at the Baltic Shipyard," he said.

Mishustin also noted the progress of the machine tool industry, which is the core industry for the entire shipbuilding industry. Last year, the first large enterprise in Russia for the production of universal industrial robotic manipulators was launched in Chelyabinsk. They are capable of servicing turning and milling machines, as well as loading presses for hot stamping.

"Now they are already being made by ten companies throughout the country," he stressed.

To ensure systemic support for this area, the national project of technological leadership "Production and automation tools" was launched in January, the Prime Minister added.
