Haikou Meilan Airport records hike in traffic in Q1

Passenger traffic during this period went up 33.5% to 8.65 million people

HAIKOU /China/, April 2. /TASS/. Haikou Meilan International Airport in the southern Chinese province of Hainan has significantly increased the volume of passenger and cargo transportation in the first quarter of this year, Hainan Daily reported.

According to official data, the airport served a total of 56.2 thousand flights between January and March, which is 25.3% higher than the figure for the same period last year. As for passenger traffic, it increased 33.5% during the period and reached 8.65 million people. The cargo and mail figure went up 42.3% and amounted to 62.9 thousand tons.

The airport administration has been actively working on restoring international flights and opening new ones since the beginning of this year. On January 10, flights on the Haikou-Shanghai-Osaka route were launched, and on January 15, the Haikou-Ho Chi Minh City route was opened. At the end of January, the airport opened the Haikou-Abu Dhabi route, which was Hainan's first to the Middle East.

Since the beginning of 2024, Meilan Airport launched international cargo flights to Singapore, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Bournemouth. On March 6, it also established an air express parcel service from New Zealand to Hainan. By the end of last month, over 1.3 thousand tons of various shipments were transported via this route.
