EU sanctions against Russia effective only on paper — Hungarian PM Orban

However, Hungary will not obstruct their implementation until they cause no harm to Hungary’s own security, Viktor Orban noted

VIENNA, May 16. /TASS/. EU sanctions look intimidating only on paper, they are unlikely to force Russia to change its policy on Ukraine, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said before the lawmakers Monday.

"Europe today has no resources to cope with the conflict in a neighboring state, but the leaders of the continent are convinced that Russia could be forced on its knees with sanctions. However, it is possible only on paper," he said, according to MTI.

Despite its skepticism regarding EU’s anti-Russian sanctions, Hungary will not obstruct their implementation until they cause no harm to Hungary’s own security, including in the energy sector, Orban said.

Orban delivered his speech after the lawmakers reelected him as Prime Minister for four more years with an overwhelming majority. On April 3, his Fidesz party secured a convincing victory in parliamentary elections; in early May, the president ordered Orban to form a new government.
