Russia points to risk of dangerous pathogen spread around US-controlled biolabs

MOSCOW, April 7. /TASS/. The lack of transparency in the US’ military-biological activities poses the risk of spreading dangerous pathogens in areas where their biological facilities are located, Chief of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Troops Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov said on Friday.

"It is necessary to note that the United States has never explicitly declared its commitment to the security of research at the biolaboratories they control. The lack of transparency in their activities creates the risk of spreading dangerous pathogens around these bio facilities," he told a briefing on the analysis of documents on the United States’ military-biological activities.

He recalled that in August 2021 a South Korean public organization had filed a lawsuit against the Fort Detrick biolaboratory as well as US troops in Korea for smuggling toxic substances to US military bases in violation of domestic laws. The US command in Korea illegally imported dangerous substances to its military bases from November 2017 to January 2019. On April 5, 2022, people in South Korea took to the streets to protest against US biolaboratories near the military base in Busan.

"The public protests in Korea are not an isolated incident. Earlier, mass protests against the activities of American biolaboratories took place in Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, and Serbia," he added.
