TUNIS, March 20. /TASS/. The death toll in the fighting in the Gaza Strip, which Israel resumed on March 18, rose to 591, another 1,042 people were injured, the authorities of the Palestinian enclave reported.
According to them, the majority of the dead (more than 70%) are children, women and the elderly. The officials' statement emphasized that many bodies remain under the rubble of destroyed buildings and rescuers have not yet been able to remove them.
Earlier on Thursday, the Health Ministry reported that at least 506 people have died in Gaza since March 18. According to the ministry, the total number of deaths in the enclave since the start of the Israeli military operation in October reached 49,617, with 112,950 people injured.
On March 18, the Israeli army launched massive attacks on the enclave. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explained that the radical Palestinian movement Hamas had rejected the proposals put forward at the talks by the mediators and the special envoy of US President Steven Witkoff, saying that the goal of the operation in Gaza was the release of all hostages. The radicals blamed Israel and the United States for the resumption of hostilities.
