Russia, US outline steps towards normalizing diplomatic work — State Department

According to the document, the US side "raised concerns" regarding access to banking and contracted services as well as "the need to ensure stable and sustainable staffing levels at the US Embassy in Moscow" during the talks

WASHINGTON, February 28. /TASS/. Russian and US delegations held a constructive discussion in Istanbul on February 27, outlining first steps towards stabilizing the work of diplomatic missions, the US Department of State said in a statement.

According to the document, the US side "raised concerns" regarding access to banking and contracted services as well as "the need to ensure stable and sustainable staffing levels at the US Embassy in Moscow" during the talks.

"Through constructive discussions, both sides identified concrete initial steps to stabilize bilateral mission operations in these areas," the statement says.

The sides agreed to hold a follow-up meeting on these issues in the near term, with the date, location, and representation to be determined later.

Thursday’s meeting was held in continuation of contacts between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the Department of State said.

The US delegation was led by Sonata Coulter, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Russia and Central Europe, and the Russian delegation was led by Ministry of Foreign Affairs North Atlantic Department Director Ambassador Alexander Darchiyev.

In recent weeks, communication between Russia and the US has intensified. On February 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump spoke by phone. The conversation, which lasted nearly 1 1/2 hours, took place 23 days into Trump’s presidency. The presidents discussed a wide range of issues, including the Ukrainian conflict, bilateral relations and exchange of citizens. Then, on February 18, high-level Russian and US delegations met in Riyadh. After the meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the sides had reached an agreement to swiftly appoint a Russian ambassador to the US and a US ambassador to Russia, as well as remove long-standing obstacles to the work of Russian diplomatic missions.
