World should lift sanctions on Syria, welcome it back, Turkish president says

Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed the need to rebuild Syrian cities so that refugees can voluntarily return to their country and live there in peace

ANKARA, December 20. /TASS/. The global community needs to lift sanctions imposed on Syria during the leadership of former President Bashar Assad and help the country reintegrate, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said following his return from Egypt.

"Syria's internal conflicts and wartime have ruined its infrastructure. The Syrian economy has also collapsed. Lifting the embargo and restrictions that were imposed on Syria during the Assad regime would help the country in its recovery. Syria's reintegration into the international community is another issue that needs to be addressed. Along with that, the future Syrian state needs an inclusive constitution and a political system at its heart. We should also remember that the Syrian people will determine the future of their own country," Anadolu Agency quoted the Turkish president as saying.

Erdogan stressed the need to rebuild Syrian cities so that refugees can voluntarily return to their country and live there in peace. "The housing issue must be solved. New residential houses, businesses, production and energy facilities, farms for agriculture and animal husbandry should be built as soon as possible," Erdogan said.

Meanwhile, the Turkish president emphasized that "Syria is lacking humanitarian aid, which is not provided to the country as it was expected." "Turkey has greatly contributed to humanitarian aid for Syria in its new era and will continue its assistance efforts," he added.
