Israeli attack affects Syrian port of Latakia, military facilities, source confirms

According to the source, the situation in the Syrian province is calm

MOSCOW, December 10. /TASS/. A major Israeli attack on Latakia targeted military facilities and the port where warships of the Syrian Navy were stationed, a source in the Syrian governorate told TASS.

"Israel has carried out strikes. Only Syrian military facilities were targeted. While Latakia itself was not affected, the part of the port where the Syrian Army’s [Navy] stationed was damaged," the source said in a phone conversation. According to the source, the situation in the Syrian province is calm. "Everything is relatively okay with food, the Internet, and water. All civilians remain in the city, and they are calm," the source added.

"[New authorities] maintain order. I don’t know how it will turn out [in the future], maybe it’s temporary," the source noted.

Late on December 9, Al Mayadeen TV channel reported Israeli strikes on the Syrian army’s positions in the Latakia governorate.

On November 27, Syria’s armed opposition launched a large-scale offensive on the positions of government forces in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. By the evening of December 7, President Bashar Assad’s opponents had seized several major cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Daraa, and Homs. On December 8, they entered the Syrian capital, Damascus, while the army withdrew from the city. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali expressed his readiness to peacefully transfer power in the republic. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Assad stepped down and left the country, having given instructions for the peaceful transfer of power.
