BUDAPEST, December 1. /TASS/. Hungary is against starting negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU as it believes that Kiev is not ready for this and the consequences of such a move have not been properly analyzed, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said, speaking on the morning program of the Kossuth radio.
He noted that "Ukraine is currently in a state of war," and it is not even known exactly what the size of its population is, "because people are constantly fleeing Ukraine."
"Its legal and political system works differently than in a country during peacetime. Therefore, we cannot say whether Ukraine is obeying those constitutional principles of the rule of law that apply in all EU countries," Orban said.
He noted that the consequences of Ukraine's possible accession to the EU, in particular the impact of such a step on the European economy, had not been thought through. "We do not know whether the inclusion of Ukrainian agriculture in the free market system will benefit European farmers," the prime minister explained.
In this regard, he said that Hungary did not support the European Commission's recommendation to start EU accession talks with Ukraine and suggested not to include this issue on the agenda of the EU summit scheduled for December 14-15 in Brussels.
