Iraqi Shia units attack US base near gas field in Syria

Several powerful explosions rocked the base, where thick clouds of smoke can now be seen rising into the sky

BEIRUT, October 30. /TASS/. A US military base located near the Konikogas gas field in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor governorate came under shelling from multiple launch rocket systems, the Al Mayadeen television channel said on Monday.

According to the TV channel, several powerful explosions rocked the base, where thick clouds of smoke can now be seen rising into the sky.

It also said that the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, incorporating Shia armed units which fought against Islamic State (outlawed in Russia) terrorists, has reportedly claimed responsibility.

Earlier in the day, the US pulled manpower and combat vehicles to the base from neighboring Iraq.

Since 2015, the United States has set up nine military bases in northeastern Syria. The biggest one is located in Tell Baydar north of the administrative center of the al-Hasakah Governorate (620 kilometers from Damascus). Around 900 US soldiers are deployed in Syria and some 2,500 - in Iraq.

A high-ranking Pentagon official said earlier that nineteen drone attacks had been staged on US troops in Iraq and Syria since October 17.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq said on October 26 that "mujahid units have sided with their Palestinian brothers in the Gaza Strip and are targeting US bases in support of them.".
