China to build underwater internet cable network to connect with Southeast Asian countries

Its total length will exceed 5,000 km

HAIKOU /China/, May 15. /TASS/. China will build an underwater cable system called SEA-H2X in the south of the country by 2024 to improve internet connection between China's regions and Southeast Asia countries. This was reported by China News Service.

An agreement on cooperation on this project has been reached between a number of major Chinese telecommunications companies. The total length of the system of underwater fiber optic high-speed cables will exceed 5 thousand kilometers. It will connect the southern province of Hainan, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. In the future, the connection is planned to be extended to Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia.

The implementation of this project will significantly increase the pace of digitalization in the Asian region, and increase the speed of information transmission via Internet channels. CMI, which will take part in the implementation of this project, believes that the underwater cable network will contribute to the development of digital economy in the countries participating in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). In turn, another project partner, CUG, is convinced that the cable system will become an important basic infrastructure facility to improve the quality and speed of information exchange through digital channels in the region in order to promote cooperation in trade and finance.
