South Ossetia observes day of silence before presidential election runoff

The incumbent, Anatoly Bibilov, and the leader of the Nykhas party, Alan Gagloev, qualified for the second round of the presidential election

TSKHINVAL, May 7. /TASS/. A day of silence has begun in South Ossetia on the eve of the presidential election runoff due on Sunday. On the day preceding the voting day all candidates and their proxies are prohibited from any campaigning, the head of the Central Election Commission, Emilia Gagieva, told TASS.

"According to the election legislation of South Ossetia, the campaigning period ends a day before voting day. No electioneering activity on this day is allowed," she stressed.

The CEC said the republic was ready for voting; 40,000 ballot papers have been printed.

On voting day, 76 polling stations will open, including four outside the republic: two in Vladikavkaz, one in Moscow and one Sukhum (Abkhazia).

The incumbent, Anatoly Bibilov, and the leader of the Nykhas party, Alan Gagloev, qualified for the second round of the presidential election. The winner will be determined by a simple majority. For the second round of elections to be recognized as valid, more than 30% of the voters included in the voting lists must participate.
