Almost 400 fishermen rescued from ice floe off Sakhalin — officials

It was reported earlier the sheet of ice broke off and floated into the Sea of Okhotsk, trapping 200 fishermen

MOSCOW, February 28. /TASS/. Rescuers have removed 374 fishermen from an ice floe that broke away from the island of Sakhalin, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said.

"The rescue operation off Sakhalin has been completed successfully. The entire ice field and the coast have been surveyed. All people have been taken to the shore. A total of 374 people were rescued," the ministry said in a statement.

It was reported earlier the sheet of ice broke off and floated into the Sea of Okhotsk, trapping 200 fishermen. The rescue effort involved a hovercraft and an Mi-8 helicopter.
