US to shut down federal agencies, departments on January 9 to honor Jimmy Carter’s memory

Some offices, department and agency facilities will continue to operate on January 9 "for reasons of national security, defense or other public need"

WASHINGTON, December 31. /TASS/. US President Joe Biden announced that all government agencies and departments will shut down on January 9 to honor the memory of 39th US President Jimmy Carter.

"All executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed on January 9, 2025, as a mark of respect for James Earl Carter, Jr., the thirty-ninth President of the United States," says the executive order, published on the White House website.

Some offices, department and agency facilities will continue to operate on January 9 "for reasons of national security, defense or other public need."

Previously, Biden announced a day of national mourning on January 9 over the death of former President Carter.

Jimmy Carter (full name James Earl Carter, Jr.), who served as the US President between 1977 and 1981, passed away at the age of 100 in his home in Georgia on December 29.
