MOSCOW, March 25. /TASS/. Russia needs to learn from China's experience in cargo transportation for the construction of ports on the Northern Sea Route (NSR), Chairman of the State Council Commission on International Cooperation and Export, the Arkhangelsk Region's Governor Alexander Tsybulsky said in an interview with TASS.
"The Northern Sea Route should start transporting many times more cargo [than it does at the moment], and we are facing this task," he said. "We need to look at our neighbors, the Chinese. We have been to China, visited the port in Dalian, not the largest port, but anyway it handles 385 million tons per year. One port, which in the next five years will reach the level of 500 million tons. These are the numbers we need to eye when speaking about the Northern Sea Route."
The Murmansk transport hub could handle more than 100 million tons of cargo in the future, however, he continued, this is not enough to ensure year-round cargo traffic along NSR.
Earlier, First Deputy Minister for Development of the Far East and Arctic Gadzhimagomed Huseynov said by the end of 2024, the NSR cargo traffic hit a record of 37.3 million tons.
