Taiwan records approach of 15 aircraft, four ships from Chinese army

Taiwan’s armed forces used ships and warplanes to monitor the movement of the Chinese aircraft and also deployed air defense systems

HONG KONG /XIANGGANG/, March 10. /TASS/. Taiwan reported on Friday the approach of 15 aircraft of the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA) and four PLAN vessels in the area adjacent to the island, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said in a statement on Twitter.

According to the statement, one fighter jet, specifically a J-11, entered the airspace near the so-called median line in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan’s armed forces used ships and warplanes to monitor the movement of the Chinese aircraft and also deployed air defense systems.

The PLA has been regularly patrolling the waters near the island. Tensions in the Taiwan Strait escalated after former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi paid a visit to Taipei last August. The trip was followed by some more delegations of US congressmen and governors. China has criticized such visits as inflammatory, branding the moves as meddling in China’s internal affairs and support for Taiwanese separatists.

Taiwan has been governed by its local administration since 1949. Official Beijing considers Taiwan a province of the People’s Republic of China. Washington has been a key supplier of weapons and military hardware to Taipei.
