WASHINGTON, January 13. /TASS/. The US is hoping to work together with Taiwanese President-elect Lai Ching-te in line with the one-China policy, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.
"We look forward to working with Dr. Lai and Taiwan’s leaders of all parties to advance our shared interests and values, and to further our longstanding unofficial relationship, consistent with the US one China policy," Blinken said in a statement.
"The United States is committed to maintaining cross-Strait peace and stability, and the peaceful resolution of differences, free from coercion and pressure," the statement said. "The partnership between the American people and the people on Taiwan, rooted in democratic values, continues to broaden and deepen across economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties."
"We are confident that Taiwan will continue to serve as an example for all who strive for freedom, democracy, and prosperity," the top US diplomat went on to say.
Lai Ching-te, a candidate from Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party, has won the island’s presidential election, according to election officials. According to the Taiwanese Central Election Commission, he collected 40.05% of the votes, while his closest rival Hou You-yi, from the opposition Kuomintang party, gathered 33.49%.
Taiwan has been governed by its local administration since 1949 when the Kuomintang’s remaining forces headed by Chiang Kai-shek were defeated in the Chinese Civil War and took refuge on the island. China regards the island as one of its provinces.
