EU to reach compromise on new sanctions ‘sooner or later’ — Scholz

The German Chancellor urged to take into account the situation with dependence on Russian energy resources in different countries

BRUSSELS, May 30. /TASS/. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday said EU member countries are seeking an agreement on the sixth package of sanctions on Russia, but it’s important that they act in concert, given that the countries are in different situations.

"I see that there are talks that are conducted with the will to reach an agreement," he said as he arrived for a summit of the bloc. "No one can say in advance whether this will be the case." According to the chancellor, "an agreement can be reached sooner or later."

The chancellor urged "to take into account the special situation" with dependence on Russian energy resources in different countries of the community. "We did this in the past, and we will do this in the future," Scholz said. "Our strength is that we solve our problems together."

"I am convinced that today and tomorrow we will continue discussions for the sake of an acceptable solution," he went on to say.

EU countries have been unable to reach a compromise on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, which according to the European Commission, should include an oil embargo, for more than three weeks. It’s proposed to introduce a ban on the import of crude oil from Russia six months after the sixth package enters into force, and on the import of petroleum products from 2023. Hungary opposes these measures, with the support of some other countries that believe that, if adopted, they will do catastrophic damage to the European economy.
