Numerous football federations support Russia’s return to international tournaments — RFU

FIFA announced on February 28, 2022, that the Russian national team and all professional clubs representing the country were barred from participating in FIFA tournaments

MOSCOW, December 24. /TASS/. /TASS/. A significant number of national football federations view positively a possible return of Russian teams to international tournaments, Russian Football Union (RFU) Secretary General Maxim Mitrofanov said on Tuesday.

Celebrations honoring 100 years of the Bulgarian football were held on December 2 at the Bulgarian Football Union’s (BFU) headquarters in Sofia.

"The Bulgarian Football Union had to be congratulated as they celebrated a big holiday, a round anniversary. We could not afford not to come," Mitrofanov said in an interview with Russia’s sports daily Sport Express.

"We just talked with them, with other federations in general, about the development of football; of course, we touched upon the issue of Russia's return to international competitions, including with the leadership of UEFA," he said.

"There are quite a lot of countries that show a positive attitude toward us now. I hope that some changes will really happen soon," Mitrofanov added.

Russia’s football ban

The International Association of Football Federations (FIFA) announced on February 28, 2022, that the Russian national team and all professional clubs representing the country were barred from participating in FIFA tournaments.

In turn, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) made a similar decision regarding the Russian national football team’s participation in UEFA tournaments.

Both FIFA and UEFA cited Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine as grounds for their respective bans on Russian teams’ participation in competitions.

Since sanctions were introduced, the Russian national football squad has played a series of friendlies against other countries, namely against Kyrgyzstan (2-1), Tajikistan (0-0), Uzbekistan (0-0), Iran (1-1), Iraq (2-0), Cameroon (1-0), Kenya (2-2), Cuba (8-0), Serbia (4-0), Belarus (4-0), Vietnam (3-0), Brunei (11-0), and Syria (4-0).
