Nord Stream pipeline sabotage may affect Baltic cod

Four leaks were discovered in 2022 on the Nord Stream gas link, with the most recent one pinpointed by Sweden’s coast guard

STOCKHOLM, January 25. /TASS/. Methane emission at the explosion site of Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines may have affected the condition of Baltic cod, the Swedish National Veterinary Institute said on Wednesday.

In October 2022, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences organized an expedition to the area northeast of Bornholm Island, where gas pipeline leaks had been found. Fish specimens were caught and handed over to the Institute for review. Experts now state that the fish caught near the sabotage site have been observed to have certain changes in their gills. The deviations may be connected with substitution of oxygen in water with methane.

Four leaks were discovered in 2022 on the Nord Stream gas link, with the most recent one pinpointed by Sweden’s coast guard. Earlier, the Nord Stream AG company reported that three threads of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 offshore gas pipelines had suffered unprecedented damage on September 26. The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office opened a case on the act of international terrorism after the gas pipelines were damaged.
