Number of injured in Taiwanese earthquake rises to 1,038

Nine people are listed as dead, 93 are yet to be rescued and 52 are missing

HONG KONG, April 4. /TASS/. At least 1,038 people were injured as a result of the recent earthquake in Taiwan, the Taiwanese crisis response center said in its bulletin.

According to the updated statistics as of 9:00 a.m. local time (1:00 a.m. GMT), nine people are listed as dead, 93 are yet to be rescued and 52 are missing.

TASS calculations based on data from the island’s Central Weather Administration, indicate that at least 322 aftershocks have been registered since early Wednesday. Five of them occurred in the early hours of Thursday.

On Wednesday morning, Taiwan was rocked by an earthquake, its strongest in 25 years. The 7.2-magnitude tremors hit Hualien County at 7:58 a.m. local time and were felt across Taiwan. According to seismologists, the epicenter was located at a depth of 15.5 kilometers some 25 kilometers southeast of the city of Hualien on the island’s east coast. The tremors were distinctly felt in China’s eastern provinces of Fujian and Jiangxi.
