Europe can provide no guarantees for peace in Ukraine without US — Hungary’s PM

Viktor Orban reminded that the two largest European countries - France and Germany - had once participated in the preparation of the Minsk agreements on the settlement in Ukraine, but they failed to be implemented

BUDAPEST, March 28. /TASS/. The European Union will fail to secure guarantees for a peace agreement that may be signed between Russia and Ukraine without the participation of the United States, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated to the Kossuth radio station.

He reminded that the two largest European countries - France and Germany - had once participated in the preparation of the Minsk agreements on the settlement in Ukraine, but they failed to be implemented. "It turned out that a European guarantee, a French-German guarantee was insufficient. It turned out that Europe did not have enough influence and authority to ensure adherence to such a peace agreement," the prime minister said.

"If Europeans are unable to do it, let us consider what else can be done. America should be involved in this. It is bigger, stronger, and it has a greater chance of achieving success and peace," Orban said.

"I think we have no other option but to fully support America's pursuit of peace with all our strength," he added. According to Orban, only Hungary mainly holds such a position at the moment, but a number of other countries, including Slovakia and Italy, are also beginning to reconsider this and adjust their approach to the settlement of the Ukraine conflict.
