Police identify man behind shooting in Russia’s Arctic city of Murmansk — official

MURMANSK, March 31. /TASS/. The man who went on a shooting spree from a building’s roof in the central part of Russia’s Arctic city of Murmansk is an employee at a federal institution, the Northern Expeditionary Emergency Rescue Unit, a regional law enforcement official told TASS.

"The suspect has been identified as Vladislav Zavgorodny. According to preliminary data, he works with the Northern Expeditionary Emergency Rescue Unit. He is alive but in critical condition," the official said.

The man, born in 1981, opened gunfire at a unit of the Patrol and Guard Service from atop a building on Kolsky Avenue in downtown Murmansk late on March 30. The attack caused no casualties. The shooter suffered severe injuries in a police operation. Two firearms were found and seized from the site. A criminal investigation has been launched into the attempt on the lives of law enforcement officers.
