Frigate Admiral Gorshkov moors in Cape Town — Russian embassy

The exercise area extends from the city of Durban to Richards Bay, located 87 nautical miles (160 kilometers) from each other

PRETORIA, February 14. /TASS/. Russia’s frigate Admiral Gorshkov, currently on a long voyage, has arrived in the area of Cape of Good Hope and entered the South African port of Cape Town, a staffer of the Russian consulate-general in Cape Town has confirmed to TASS.

According to the diplomat, the ship entered the port of Cape Town on February 13 and moored at one of the berths.

"Toward the evening of February 14, it will become clear for how long the frigate will stay in Cape Town," the Russian diplomat said.

The Admiral Gorshkov frigate will take part in a joint naval exercise by South Africa, Russia and China codenamed Mosi. The drills will be held from on February 17 to 27 in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. The active phase of the exercises will begin on February 25, the South African Defense Ministry told TASS. Prior to this, the parties involved will clarify the objectives and carry out the necessary coordination.

The exercise area extends from the city of Durban to Richards Bay, located 87 nautical miles (160 kilometers) from each other. In order to arrive in Durban, the Russian frigate is to bypass southern Africa from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean.

The current trilateral exercise is a second one. The previous one took place in November 2019 near Cape Town southwest of South Africa in the Atlantic Ocean.
