MOSCOW, March 27. /TASS/. A personal meeting between Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and Pope Francis may be organized this year, Metropolitan of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations Hilarion said on Sunday.

The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said on March 9 that the work on a possible meeting between Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis was complicated because of the situation in Ukraine.

"I hope the meeting will finally be held this year. It will be a personal meeting," Metropolitan Hilarion said in an interview with the Rossiya-24 television channel.

The first meeting between Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis took place in Havana in 2016.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in response to a request for help by the heads of the Donbass republics. He stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories, but aimed to demilitarize and denazify the country.

When clarifying the unfolding developments, the Russian Defense Ministry reassured that Russian troops are not targeting Ukrainian cities, but are limited to surgically striking and incapacitating Ukrainian military infrastructure. There are no threats whatsoever to the civilian population.
