Daily growth in coronavirus cases in Russia within 20%

MOSCOW, April 7. /TASS/. Daily growth in confirmed coronavirus cases in Russia is about 20%, making it possible to avert a spike in morbidity, Veronika Skvortsova, chief of Russia’s Federal Medical Biological Agency, said on Tuesday.

"We have restricted exchanges of infection agents among the population and this way have averted an exponential growth, a spike in morbidity. As a matter of fact, we have been managing to maintain a flatter sine curve in the infection spread, the thing other countries tried to attain by means of restrictive measures. The daily growth is 18-20%," she said in an interview with the Rossiya-24 television channel.

She noted that Russia had managed to avert a spike in the infection rates thanks, among other things, to a strict quarantine and isolation of people of the risk groups. "Correspondingly, once we have a smooth growth, the percentage of serious cases, which is typically stands at 15-20% of the overall number of cases, in raw numbers is not too burdensome for the healthcare system," she added.

As of April 7, a total of 7,497 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Russia. As many as 494 patients have recovered. According to data as of 10:30 Moscow time, fifty-eight patients died. Moscow accounts for the majority of cases (5,181). The Russian government set up an Internet hotline to keep the public informed about the coronavirus situation.

Coronavirus spread plateau

The coronavirus spread curve in Russia is expected to reach a plateau in ten to 14 days, Veronika Skvortsova said on Tuesday.

"According to the data from the leading forecaster groups comprised of mathematicians and biologists, and there are a number of such group in our country, a plateau concerning this infection will be reached in ten to 14 days. Afterwards, we will stay there for a while and begin downwards movement.

According to Skvortsova, the plateau is expected to stay in place till mid-June and the downwards movement will take about the same time as upwards’. "It is in case, the process scenario remains unchanged. And it depends on each of us," she stressed.
