Russia’s coal output and exports in 2024 expected to stay at 2023 level — Energy Ministry

According to Sergey Mochalnikov, the coal industry is going through the current year at minimum prices, but demand is expected to increase from 2025

MOSCOW, April 12. /TASS/. The Russian Ministry of Energy expects that in 2024 the coal industry figures will remain approximately at the level of 2023, Deputy Minister of Energy Sergey Mochalnikov said on Friday.

"In our plans for 2024, we set the goal of maintaining 2023 figures," he said.

According to Mochalnikov, the coal industry is going through the current year at minimum prices, but demand is expected to increase from 2025.

Mochalnikov also noted that Russian coal production in the Q1 of 2024 is line with the 2023 schedule. "We proceed according to the 2023 schedule as regards [coal] production in the first quarter. There is a small drop in exports," the deputy minister said. No revision of export and production schedules is planned, he noted.

Production and exports are planned to be kept in 2024 at the level of 440 mln metric tons and 210-220 mln metric tons respectively, Mochalnikov said. "We had certain logistical constraints [for the Eastern Range] and there is a price rally now, and it is unclear when it will end. Considering that the Eastern Range is limited, we had to carry Russian coal products through ports of the Azov-Black Sea basin and Northwestern ports," he noted.

In 2024, it is planned to deliver about 111 mln metric tons by rail in the eastern destination, the official noted. "It is more than in 2023 -it was 108 mln metric tons at that time," he added.
