Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg resumes activities after two year hiatus

Hyundai Motor's board of directors approved the plan to sell the plant on December 19, 2023

ST. PETERSBURG, January 9. /TASS/. The Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg is back in operation after a two year break, the press service of the enterprise told TASS.

"The stoppage has not been extended. We are engaged in personnel training and equipment maintenance," the press service reported.

Currently, the plant’s staff comprises approximately 800 people, the press service clarified.

Hyundai Motor's board of directors approved the plan to sell the plant on December 19, 2023. Hyundai Motor intends to continue after-sales service in Russia. Deputy Prime Minister and Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov told TASS that cars will begin to be assembled at the former plant of the South Korean concern Hyundai in St. Petersburg by mid-2024.

The Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg began operating in 2010 but stopped making cars in March 2022 due to supply chain difficulties. As a result, 2,206 of the plant's 2,537 employees were put on furlough. Before production ceased, the plant produced popular car models like the Hyundai Solaris, Hyundai Creta, Kia Rio and Kia Rio X-Line. The plant’s production capacity used to be more than 200,000 cars per year.
