UK premier calls for Gaza ceasefire following truce in Lebanon

Keir Starmer called the deal as "long overdue"

LONDON, November 27. /TASS/. The United Kingdom welcomes the agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon and hopes for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as well, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement.

Describing the deal as "long overdue," Starmer said it would "provide some measure of relief to the civilian populations of Lebanon and northern Israel, who have suffered unimaginable consequences during the last few months of devastating conflict and bloodshed."

"Now, this deal must be turned into a lasting political solution in Lebanon, based on Security Council Resolution 1701, that will allow civilians to return permanently to their homes and for communities on both sides of the border to rebuild," he continued.

"The UK and its allies will continue to be at the forefront of efforts to break the ongoing cycle of violence in pursuit of a long-term, sustainable peace in the Middle East," Starmer added. "We must see immediate progress towards a ceasefire deal in Gaza, the release of all hostages and the removal of restrictions on desperately needed humanitarian aid."

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyuahu announced on Tuesday night that the Israeli war cabinet has officially accepted the US-proposed plan of a ceasefire in Lebanon.

Shortly after, US President Joe Biden announced that, in line with the agreement, Lebanese forces are to regain full control over the country’s territory within 60 days. After that, Israeli forces will be withdrawn and residents will be allowed to return safely to their homes and start rebuilding them.
