Iran calls on world to scrutinize Israel's nuclear activities

According to Abbas Araghchi, Israel possesses weapons of mass destruction that "pose a serious threat to security in the region and the world"

DUBAI, February 24. /TASS/. The world should scrutinize Israel's nuclear activities and take them under control, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a speech at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

"The international community must hold Israel accountable in this area. While Iran is developing its peaceful nuclear program under international supervision and in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons <...>, Israel is neither a party to any convention nor a member of an international nuclear arms control organization and continues its activities without any control or restrictions," Araghchi was quoted as saying by SNN television.

According to the Iranian diplomat, Israel possesses weapons of mass destruction that "pose a serious threat to security in the region and the world." He called for a new comprehensive nuclear weapons convention.

Concluded in 1968, the Non-Proliferation Treaty legitimized the nuclear arsenals of Russia, the UK, China, France, the US and Russia. Other countries, if they sign the accord, forfeit the right to build or acquire weapons of mass destruction. More than 190 countries are now party to the agreement. Israel, India and Pakistan never joined the treaty, while North Korea withdrew in January 2003.
