Pandemic shows importance of borders, sovereign states — Defense Minister

The pandemic revealed that state borders keep significance because the opportunity to provide help to the population is only available at the national level, Sergey Shoigu noted

MOSCOW, June 22. /TASS/. The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated importance of state borders, and lockdown activities can only be provided within the sovereign state framework, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said at the 9th Moscow Conference on International Security.

"The role of sovereign states is growing in supporting security of nationals in the broad sense. The pandemic revealed that state borders keep significance because the opportunity for prompt implementation of quarantine measures and provide help to the population is only available at the national level," Shoigu said.

About 178.8 mln coronavirus cases have been registered worldwide since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and over 3.8 mln people died.
