Trump administration to re-establish deterrence, Pentagon chief says

Pete Hegseth emphasized that efforts to re-establish deterrence should start with the US border with Mexico

WASHINGTON, February 7. /TASS/. The US administration led by President Donald Trump is determined to re-establish deterrence, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated.

"Re-establishing deterrence" is one of the goals, he said at a meeting with Pentagon staffers.

According to Hegseth, the international developments of the past couple of years "have created the perception <...> of American weakness." In this regard, he mentioned the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, vowing that the new US government would hold those responsible to account, and the conflict in Ukraine.

However, the Pentagon chief emphasized that efforts to re-establish deterrence should start with the US border with Mexico. "It starts with the defense of our homeland," Hegseth said.
