Vietnamese defense minister advocates for strengthening partnership with Russia

Both sides affirmed that defense cooperation is a key pillar of Vietnam-Russia relations

HANOI, December 27. /TASS/. Vietnam is committed to enhancing and further developing defense cooperation with Russia, the country's Minister of National Defense, Army General Phan Van Giang, stated during a visit from Russian Deputy Defense Minister Colonel General Alexander Fomin, according to the Quan Doi Nhan Dan army newspaper.

The Vietnamese defense minister emphasized that the people of Vietnam and the People’s Army of Vietnam "have always valued and appreciated the immense support and assistance provided by Russia in their efforts toward national independence and unification, as well as in the defense of the homeland and reconstruction."

Both sides affirmed that defense cooperation is a key pillar of Vietnam-Russia relations. According to the Vietnamese army general, the two nations will continue to expand defense cooperation within the framework of their traditional friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership under international law. This will enhance the effectiveness of existing cooperation mechanisms and further solidify, broaden, and deepen ties between the armed forces of Vietnam and Russia moving forward, the newspaper reported.

The Vietnamese defense minister praised the outcomes of the 7th round of the Vietnam-Russia defense strategic dialogue, held in Hanoi with Fomin and his Vietnamese counterpart, Colonel General Hoang Xuan Chien. They reportedly engaged in an open exchange of views on global and regional issues of mutual concern, evaluated the results of defense cooperation for the current year, and set priorities for the upcoming period.

On behalf of Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, the deputy defense minister invited Army General Phan Van Giang to visit Moscow in May 2025 for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, and invited 80 servicemen from the Vietnamese People’s Army to participate in the parade on Red Square, Quan Doi Nhan Dan reported.
