Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan would cross Beijing’s "red line" — foreign minister

Wang Yi touched upon the issue in a telephone conversation French diplomatic counsellor Emmanuel Bonne, which was mostly devoted to Ukraine

HONG KONG /Xianggang/, April 8. /TASS/. Beijing will interpret US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s hypothetical visit to Taiwan as a step over the "red line," China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned on Thursday, the South China Morning Post said on Friday.

"If Pelosi, a political leader of the United States, knowingly visits Taiwan, it would be a malicious provocation against China’s sovereignty and gross interference in China’s internal affairs, and would send an extremely dangerous political signal to the outside world," he said.

The Chinese daily said Wang touched upon the issue in a telephone conversation French diplomatic counsellor Emmanuel Bonne, which was mostly devoted to Ukraine.

Originally, Pelosi had plans for visiting Japan and then, according to some Japanese media, for arriving in Taiwan on Sunday. That visit would have been the first by a US House of Representatives speaker to the island over the past 25 years.

Neither side has officially confirmed plans for such a trip. On Thursday, Pelosi was diagnosed with COVID-19 and her Asian trip had to be postponed. The authorities in Taipei wished Pelosi prompt recovery and described her as Taiwan’s true friend.
