Putin says NATO spending 3% of GDP on defense, won’t cut it

Meanwhile, according to the Russian leader, the combat readiness of the Russian army is currently the highest in the world

MOSCOW, December 19. /TASS/. With the cost of ammunition going through the roof recently, NATO countries will need to spend more than just 3% of GDP on defense, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"And what is going on there [in the West]? One 155mm shell cost 2,000 euro two years ago. Now it costs 8,000 euro, or four times as much," he said at his combined annual press conference and question-and-answer session. "If things continue in this way, spending even 3% of GDP on defense will not be enough for NATO countries, let alone the 2% of GDP number US President-elect Mr. [Donald] Trump has called for."

Meanwhile, according to the Russian leader, the combat readiness of the Russian army is currently the highest in the world. No other army is better trained, strong both inside and out, he stressed.
