Kakhovka thermal power plant safeguarded by air defense systems — governor

Kakhovka thermal power plant is located some five kilometers from the city of Novaya Kakhovka in Kherson region

GENICHESK, January 20. /TASS/. Ukraine’s rockets cannot reach the Kakhovka thermal power plant in the Kherson region because it is securely protected by air defense systems, the region’s acting governor, Vladimir Saldo, told TASS on Friday.

"As for the thermal power plant, it is under the safe protection of an air defense system, and enemy shells cannot reach it," he said.

Saldo said in late December that the thermal power plant, which is located on the line of engagement, generates electricity primarily for its own needs.

Located some five kilometers from the city of Novaya Kakhovka, the Kakhovka thermal power plant periodically comes under shelling by Ukrainian troops along with a number of other cities in the Kherson region. As a result of such shelling attacks, many schools and social infrastructure facilities have been ruined and a lot of residential houses have been damaged. According to the local authorities, around 70% of the houses in Novaya Kakhovka have been damaged.
