Ceasefire deal does not envisage US military presence in Lebanon’s south — Biden

A high-ranking US administration official confirmed the information at a special briefing, adding that Washington will provide military support to Lebanon’s armed forces

WASHINGTON, November 27. /TASS/. A ceasefire deal between the Israeli government and Lebanon’s Shia organization Hezbollah does not envisage US military presence in Lebanon’s southern regions, US President Joe Biden said.

"There will be no US troops deployed in southern Lebanon. This is consistent with my commitment to the American people to not put US troops in combat in this conflict. Instead, we, along with France and others, will provide the necessary assistance to make sure this deal is implemented fully and effectively," he told reporters in the White House Rose Garden.

A high-ranking US administration official confirmed the information at a special briefing, adding that Washington will provide military support to Lebanon’s armed forces. In his words, the United States, France and other allies are ready to offer additional equipment, training and financial support to the Lebanese military.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyuahu announced on Tuesday night that the Israeli war cabinet has officially accepted the US-proposed plan of a ceasefire in Lebanon.

Shortly after, US President Joe Biden announced that, in line with the agreement, Lebanese forces are to regain full control over the country’s territory within 60 days. After that, Israeli forces will be withdrawn and residents will be allowed to return safely to their homes and start rebuilding them.
