China, Russia initiative to ease sanctions against North Korea stays in force — UN envoy

The joint draft resolution is aimed at reducing humanitarian problems in the DPRK, Zhang Jun pointed out

UNITED NATIONS, June 8./TASS/. China and Russia still expect that the UN Security Council countries will consider their joint proposal to expand humanitarian exemptions to the sanctions against North Korea, China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun told a meeting of the UN General Assembly on the DPRK.

"The joint Russian-Chinese draft resolution on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is aimed at reducing humanitarian problems in the DPRK and encouraging the political settlement on the peninsula. We urge all countries to approach this project positively and support it," the ambassador said.

Zhang Jun once again pointed to the inadmissibility of the sanction approach proposed by the US in its resolution of May 27. China and Russia vetoed the US-drafted resolution to tighten the sanctions.
