THE HAGUE, March 2. /TASS/. Nicaragua has filed a case at the United Nations International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Germany for providing financial and military aid to Israel, the court said in a press release.
According to the ICJ, the move concerns alleged violations by Germany of its obligations under the the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Nicaragua points out that "every Contracting Party to the Genocide Convention has a duty under the Convention to do everything possible to prevent the commission of genocide" and that, since October 2023, there has been "a recognized risk of genocide against the Palestinian people, directed first of all against the population of the Gaza Strip". This is why, according to the Nicaraguan authorities, by providing political, financial and military support to Israel and by defunding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), "Germany is facilitating the commission of genocide and, in any case has failed in its obligation to do everything possible to prevent the commission of genocide".
Nicaragua requests the International Court of Justice to declare that Germany failed to fulfil its obligation to prevent the genocide against the Palestinian people, as well as to indicate provisional measures to prevent the situation from deteriorating.
In December 2023, South Africa brought a genocide case against Israel before the International Court of Justice, citing the Genocide Convention. The case files said that Israel’s actions could be described as an act of genocide because they were based on the specific intent "to destroy Palestinians in Gaza as a part of the broader Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group.".
