MOSCOW, September 24. /TASS/. Italian film actress Claudia Cardinale, known for her roles in numerous films worldwide, has passed away at the age of 87, the newspaper ANSA reported.

According to the report, the actress died surrounded by her children in the French city of Nemours, where she had lived for several years.

Cardinale was born in Tunisia to a family of Sicilian origin. She entered the world of cinema by chance. Her debut was a small role in Mario Monicelli’s comedy I soliti ignoti, 1958.

This was followed by collaborations with renowned Italian directors. In particular, Cardinale contributed to such films as Federico Fellini’s 8· (1963), Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard (1963) and Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Throughout her long career, Cardinale also worked in France, notably with Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo, with whom she maintained friendships. Although she had an "American period," she remained a European star at heart.

The actress also collaborated with Soviet director Mikhail Kalatozov on The Red Tent (1969), a joint Soviet-Italian film about the crash of the airship Italia in the Arctic in 1928.
