WASHINGTON, February 26. /TASS/. The US leadership has yet to formulate a clear strategic rationale for launching potential airstrikes against Iran, according to former US Ambassador to Israel (2011-2017) Dan Shapiro.
"What was lacking, however, was any description of the strategic objective military strikes [on Iran] are expected to achieve. The American people deserve that," the diplomat wrote on his page on X.
The Washington Post reported earlier that the United States had increased its military presence near Iran, deploying more than 150 aircraft to bases in Europe and the Middle East following US-Iran talks in Geneva on February 17. The current US military buildup in the region is said to be the largest since the 2003 Iraq operation.
On February 26, Geneva is hosting the third round of nuclear talks between Iran and the United States. The Iranian delegation is headed by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US negotiating team is led by Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
